How to Estimate Carpet & Vinyl Flooring

Unlike tiles which come in boxes, carpet and vinyl flooring are typically sold in large rolls of fixed widths (usually 12ft or 15ft in the US, and 4m in Metric regions). This calculator helps you determine exactly how much length to cut from the roll.

Understanding Roll Widths

The most critical factor in buying carpet is the Roll Width.

  • 12 Foot Rolls: The standard for most residential carpeting in the US.
  • 15 Foot Rolls: Used for larger rooms to avoid seams.
  • 4 Meter Rolls: The standard in Europe and metric regions.

Why Do I Need a Waste Factor?

Rooms are rarely perfect squares. You need extra material to account for:

  • Seams: Matching patterns often requires cutting off several inches.
  • Doorways & Closets: Material often needs to extend into these areas.
  • Mistakes: A 10% buffer is industry standard to ensure you don't run short.
