Understanding Your Social Security Benefits

Social Security is a US federal program that provides a monthly income to retired Americans, as well as to disabled individuals and survivors. Your benefit amount is based on your lifetime earnings. This calculator provides an *estimate* to help you with your retirement planning.

What is Full Retirement Age (FRA)?

Your Full Retirement Age (FRA) is the age at which you are entitled to receive 100% of your calculated Social Security benefit. Your FRA is determined by your birth year. For anyone born in 1960 or later, the FRA is 67. If you were born earlier, our calculator will determine your specific FRA, which may be 66 and some number of months.

Early (62) vs. Delayed (70) Benefits

  • Claiming at 62: You can start receiving benefits as early as age 62. However, your monthly payment will be permanently reduced. The reduction can be up to 30% if your FRA is 67.
  • Waiting until 70: For every year you delay claiming *past* your FRA, your benefit increases by 8% (up to age 70). This means if your FRA is 67, you could receive a monthly payment that is 124% of your full benefit by waiting until 70.

How This Calculator Estimates Your Benefit

Important Disclaimer: The official Social Security calculation is extremely complex. It is based on your highest 35 years of *indexed* earnings (adjusted for inflation) to find your Average Indexed Monthly Earnings (AIME).

To provide a simple, user-friendly tool, this calculator uses your single "Average Annual Income" as a proxy for this complex history. It then applies the 2024 "bend points" (the formula for calculating benefits) to that income. The result is a high-level estimate, not an exact guarantee. For the most accurate and A. personalized estimate, you must create an account on the official SSA.gov website.
